Rare pair of sconces in chased and mercury-gilded bronze.

The acanthus scrolled stems are adorned with busts of a man and a woman. The two light sconces are delicately decorated in a whip-like pattern, simulating a climbing plant that supports the bowls. These latter, delicately adorned with godsoned friezes and lambrequins and support two asymmetrical bobèches in the shape of Medici vases finished with leafy cuffs.

Beautifully preserved.

Parisian work from the early Louis XV period, circa 1720- 1730, after models by André Charles Boulle.

Our opinion:
Our two sconces with whip-shaped light are inspired by an original model by André Charles Boulle. The purely Regency decorative repertoire of plants is truly his, as is the pure and very lively line.
Several variations with this type of arm are known, with or without cherubs, with servants, musicians, etc.
André Charles Boulle had a strong influence on the decorative arts, and many workshops continued to draw inspiration from his creations decades after his death in 1719.
His two sons stopped cabinetmaking but continued producing numerous bronzes for several years, including sconces of this type.
